Candle Fragrances- What makes us Different?

Chances are, you've seen thousands of fragranced candles for sale. Lots from big brands, lots from small independent producers

They all have exciting names, packaging designed to entice you, descriptions of what scent notes you might recognise

Ours are the same in that respect... we hope

But you may not be aware that many candle manufacturers use pre-blended fragrances from a number of large producers. The scent from one brand may be the same as another- perhaps with a name change or slightly different description, but with exactly the same fragrance. Many of these fragrances will contain synthetic or artificially processed scents. And even when blends are made from essential oils, most won't be able to tell you how the oils were extracted or where they came from. However, it does make it easier- and therefore cheaper- for makers to produce their candles. No extensive testing, no need for additional certification fees, quicker to get to market with a wider range of scents.

However, that's not really what we're about. After purchasing quite a lot of scented candles, we became frustrated by the quality of the scents (even from the bigger and more expensive brands) and the lack of environmental transparency.

We thought we could do better...

You'll have to be the judge of that!

We start by purchasing pure essential oils from reputable producers, checking out the sustainability and extraction methods for each one. You'll find that some common scents are missing from Kyrra candles, and will be permanently- if we have concerns about the sustainability of an ingredient or the way it's extracted, we won't use it.

We then blend our scents, based on an idea, an adventure or a feeling. We want you to feel like you're walking through a mountain meadow, sat next to a log fire in the woods or lying in a tropical glade surrounded by birdsong [please note, none of our candles actually sing]. When we're happy that the scent has the right effect, we blend it with wax and test it as a candle- ensuring that the scent doesn't lose its character and that the candles burn well and consistently. We keep adjusting until everything is just right. You won't find our scents in any other candle- only we and our chemist know the formulas!

We actively source oils and ingredients that benefit the environment and communities. For example, 50% of the fragrance in our Freyr scent is sustainably wild harvested by small tribal communities in Angola, providing livelihoods for low income areas and encouraging environmental stewardship as a result. We believe the quality, ethical depth and transparency of our candles is second to none.

We use a high proportion of essential oil in our candles- basically as much as we can without the candle not burning effectively. No weak scents here.

Once we're happy with the formula, we send the information off to our independent certified cosmetic chemist who produces all of our safety and chemical documentation required by law so we can label everything properly (PS, if you find a scented candle without these labels, chances are it's breaking the law. Even candles that are 100% natural will contain fragrance chemicals, and these need to be labelled).

None of this comes cheap, but when it comes to quality, luxury and sustainability we think our candles are one of the best value home fragrance products you can buy!
