The Lowdown

Our Organic Candles

When we started Kyrra, we wanted to create a luxury home fragrance brand with sustainability and responsibility at the core. With our organic candles, we've gone a step further- imagining how we could make the most environmentally and socially conscious candles ever made, down to the smallest details. Read on to find out more

Candle Wax Before Melting

Wax

Our organic wax is independently certified organic by the soil association, and is blended and made for us in the UK. With a pollinator-positive blend of European beeswax and rapeseed oil, blended with certified sustainable organic palm oil (which can all be traced back to the individual plantation- converted from cattle grazing land over 100 years ago)

The exacting standards mean that the agricultural practices employed making the wax have a positive impact on the environment and biodiversity

Fragrance

All of the fragrance in our organic candles is made from independently certified organic pure essential oils.  In addition, we source oils that benefit disadvantaged communities- our Freyr candle for example contains 50% sustainably community wild harvested organic oils, sourced from low income tribes in Angola. This provides a livelihood and opportunities to access good nutrition and education, as well as protecting local resources and encouraging good environmental stewardship

We only source sustainable essential oils that are made using environmentally friendly extraction techniques such as cold pressing or steam distillation

Wrap

The card used to wrap your Kyrra organic candle is made in one of the oldest paper mills in the UK- currently run as a charitable heritage trust. The paper is manufactured from a blend of recycled materials, embedded with British wild flower seeds. The whole wrap is plantable and biodegradable in your garden for a pollinator-positive burst of Summer colour. And yes, even the glue is biodegradable.

Mycelium Packing

Our fungal mycelium packaging helps to protect your candle from bumps in transit- and looks great too. It's grown from mycelium blended with straw, and takes very little energy and water to produce. It's also completely biodegradable and can be disposed of in your home compost or food waste bin

Glass

We choose glass candle vessels because they look beautiful and have a low environmental impact thanks to their recyclability. The vessels for our organic candles are manufactured in the UK, reducing transportation miles and reducing carbon footprint as well as ensuring that manufacturing meets the high legal environmental standards that may not be met in those manufactured overseas

Refills

Our organic candles are made with refills in mind- so if you love your candle and want to continue the experience, you can keep the jar and simply reload. Refills will also be interchangeable between fragrances, so as our organic range grows you can switch up your fragrance experience without changing the outer vessel if you wish

If you do choose to recycle, please find instructions on how to clean and prepare your candle vessel correctly in the FAQs

Manufacturing

All of our products are artisan made in County Durham, UK. Manufacturing is powered by 100% renewable electricity, and care is taken to minimise waste and reduce our environmental footprint as much as possible. All of our fragrances are formulated in-house, and are unique to Kyrra. Prior to release, all of our formulations are independently assessed by a qualified chemist

Charity

As well as ensuring our products have a positive impact on the planet, we pledge to donate 10% of profits to environmental preservation charities

Packaging Disposal

1 / Cardboard Box

If you ordered your candle online or requested a cardboard box in the retailer, these are made from recycled cardboard and can be recycled in your usual home cardboard recycling

2 / Outer Card Wrap

This is the section with all the labelling information. It's made from recycled paper embedded with British wildflower seeds. The best thing to do with this is to plant it, in your garden or a pot and watch it grow! See further instructions for this below. Don't worry, the glue we use is biodegradable and will break down in the soil with no toxic leftovers

If you don't want to plant it, you can dispose of this in industrial compost (eg a food waste bin), but please don't recycle with your normal paper or card

3 / Mycelium Packaging

This is the block or "nest" your candle sits in. This is suitable for home composting, industrial composting (eg food waste bin) or can simply be broken up and added to your garden soil where it will break down. Or you can reuse it to package something else!

4 / Glass Jar

This can be recycled in your normal glass recycling once clean (see instructions in our FAQs for tips on how to do this). Better still, you can order a refill from our site or repurpose the vessel for something else- a plant pot, pencil holder or wherever your imagination takes you!

5 / Wick Remnants

The wicks in our organic candles are entirely plant based (ie no paraffin coating) so any remnants can be composted. The glue dot that keeps them in place in your candle is also biodegradable. The small metal base at the bottom can be disposed of in general waste if you wish to separate it.

How to Plant
Your Wrap

Your candle comes wrapped in seed impregnated card that will grow into a range of beautiful pollinator-friendly British wildflowers when planted
