Raw Candle Wax

At Kyrra, everything we do is a search for constant improvement- to make our products even more sustainable, even more socially conscious and even more enjoyable for you to use.

We're only small, and there are some things we can't do yet. But we're always working hard to see what we can achieve with what we have.

When I started the company I did lots of research on every aspect of candles and their impact on the environment. Wax makes up around 90% of your candle, so clearly choice of wax is super important. It became immediately clear that paraffin was out. And on researching soy I discovered that there really is no good soy candle wax- from the monoculture and unsustainable farming practices to the transport costs and the lack of robust traceability. Rapeseed and coconut seemed to be the way to go- environmentally friendly, farmed well and, importantly, great performance- a slow and clean burn and good compatibility with essential oil fragrances. Candle waxes go through a lot of testing and quality control, and only a few companies make them - with closely guarded IP about the individual recipes. For a luxury fragranced candle, this isn't something you can simply make at home. We sourced a European made rapeseed and coconut blend from one of our wholesalers and it was the best we could find on the market at the time.

One thing did frustrate us however- we wanted our candles to be 100% natural throughout, and although we tested various 100% natural wicks, none of them could cope with the high degree of essential oils we use in our candles (one of the things about using natural oils instead of synthetic fragrance is that you need more to get an excellent scent throw, and the exact recipes have to be very carefully balanced for performance- that's part of the magic of our candles. Using essential oil blends that you won't find elsewhere to create sophisticated fragrances that you'd normally need synthetic oils to achieve- but more of that another time). So we had to settle on a cotton and linen blend wick that had a very thin paraffin coating. It was the only wick we could find that worked well, and was a compromise we felt worth making to achieve the quality and performance of our natural candles.

But we kept on looking, and, well, we're delighted to say that eventually we've cracked it! Our new wax is now made for us in the UK by a company that shares our ethos. Made with a high proportion of British grown rapeseed oil and certified organic coconut oil blended with a small amount of sustainable castor oil, we're supporting British farmers, British manufacturing and Asian family smallholders as well as reducing transportation miles. The new wax blend works really well with our new completely natural wicks- woven with a high-tech process that can cope with the demands of high levels of essential oils and give a great clean burn and excellent scent throw.

All of the candles in our core and dýr range are completely vegan

And of course, if you want a completely organic option then our organic range is made from 100% certified organic wax and essential oils (though there's beeswax in the organic wax blend so this isn't vegan)

We'd love to know what you think and always happy to receive any feedback or suggestions so do get in touch!
